How do safety films work?

Safety or security glass films offer a wide range of possibilities, both in automotive and architectural applications. These films are installed on the interior side of the glass, reinforcing it and making it safer.

Safety films feature an extremely strong adhesive compound with exceptional energy absorbing properties, composed of very elastic layers of polyesters. Thanks to their structure, safety films decrease the probability of glass breaking in case of an accident, explosion or any other type of impact, but also in case of a break in.

All quality automotive films, especially safety films, play an important role in case of an accident. With a safety automotive glass film installed, the glass is harder to break and, if it does break, the film keeps the shards locked in place, i.e. in one piece. In this way, small glass shards are prevented from scattering across passengers, reducing the risk of injury.

When no film is installed, broken side windows can damage activated air bags, which then fail to provide adequate protection. Small glass shards can also get caught between the passenger and the airbag, in which case the airbag can press the shards into the passenger’s face, causing potentially fatal injuries.

Llumar safety film provides a strong protective barrier between you and the glass. Film-protected glass can still be broken, but the shards will not scatter – they will remain attached to the film, providing protection to the passengers in the vehicle. See the footage of test collisions with and without film:

In addition to the important part safety films play in case of accidents, they also have a significant role in preventing break-in thefts. All quality automotive glass films, and especially safety/security films, reinforce the glass, making it significantly harder to break – which means the time needed to break the glass and steal the car is significantly longer.

In less than 5 seconds, a thief can break the window of your car and steal your valuables. In laboratory tests, it was ascertained that 175 micron safety Llumar films can slow down, i.e. prolong the theft time by about 40 seconds. See the video of this test:

Safety Llumar films are available in a range of different thicknesses and tints.
